Heritage chickens

All of our chickens are raised in a sustainable manner

free ranging and foraging on our farm. We do not feed or

inject any of our chickens with hormones, antibiotics, or

unneeded medications. We feel that our chickens will be

the healthiest and produce the best eggs for us by letting

them live much as nature intended. We do however have

grit, calcium, and grain available for them if they so

desire, along with plenty of green grass, vegetable

trimmings, tasty bugs from the gardens, and fresh cool

water. This year we will have a large variety of Heritage

and Rare breeds, many of them on the ,

ALBC Conservation Priority List Some

of the birds we hope to incorporate into our flock

include the Araucana/Americana, the Phoenix, Buff Orpingtons, Sultans,

Blue laced red Wyandotte, and Golden campines.

What is a heritage chicken?

from Sustainable Table

“Heritage breeds are traditional livestock breeds that

were raised by farmers in the past, before the drastic

reduction of breed variety caused by the rise of industrial

agriculture… There is no official definition

or certification for “heritage” animals, but for a

livestock breed to be truly heritage, it must have unique

genetic traits and also be raised on a sustainable and/or

organic farm. “
