Jacob sheep
Jacob sheep are a primitive old world sheep with a fine to medium fleece and no outer coat. The Jacobs are a dual purpose sheep with a leaner more flavorful carcass than improved sheep with little external fat, and their fine fleeces are highly sought after by hand spinners and weavers. The Jacobs are pied (spotted) polycerates (multi-horned) sheep where both the males and females can have 2, 4, or 6 horns.
The Jacobs fleece is a medium soft wool with nice luster and sheen; they are light and open with a weight of 3 to 6 lbs. and a length of 4 to 7 inches, with an average micron size of 34 and a range on the Bradford scale from 48 to 54. The fleeces are easy to part in order to spin, white, black, or any shade of grey desired.
The Jacob sheep has been traced back 3000 years to Syria. It is thought by many that these are the sheep that Jacob took from Laban when he left in the story of genesis.
We hope to have fleece and lambs available for sale in the spring of 2009.
